Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra

Logo, 2021

UBC’s Vancouver Phliharmonic Orchestra reached out to me to redesign their Logo and adapt to more modern times. They shared their logo at the time as well as one from twenty years ago. the vintage’s logo’s visual play on musical iconography was quite intriguing, and inspired me to honour it and follow a similar direction.

A friend of mine is a talented violinist, so early iterations inspired by her instrument aimed to illustrate the sense of whimsy and organic, childlike playfulness that is felt when one is carried by the sound of a string symphony.

Alternatively, it felt important to present more pragmatic options in order to better match the logo of the time, which was entirely text based.

The final iterations retained the incorporation of musical symbolism, with a classy, sleek and modern approach. Instead of illustrating instruments, I looked for symbols which could be easily recognized by musicians and music enthusiasts and evoke a sense of welcome and belonging. The symbol which was chosen, a whole note, or Semibreve, alludes to the extra time one may take for themselves, immersed in an evening at the orchestra.

Bayview Rail Consulting

Logo, 2023

  • Concept:

Consulting firms often opt for simple, modern logos that communicate a certain level of professionalism and inspire trust.

The client specializes in railway knowledge

The creative process was inspired by a consultant’s professional objective, which is to guide a client out of the dark. I attempted to relate this observation to the behaviour of a train conductor going through a tunnel, who carries their passenger safely to the other side. I included tunnel symbolism in order to reference this phenomenae.

We installed an arrow to symbolize this traversing process, and lined it up with the rest of the logo so it would look like a classic cow-catcher on traditional steam engines, which would mow down obstacles in its way and ensure the client would arrive to their desired destination.

The colour choices were inspired by the traditional palette that other consulting firms, such as PWC or Deloitte have adopted. These colours aim to place my client on the radar, alongside other renowned, trustworthy organizations
